All this computer stuff is pretty new to me. I know a lot about sticks and tiles and mudding and flooring and cabinets and plumbing and….. but computers?

Well, honestly, I have been using the beasts for years to do my admin, and I’m pretty good at what I know – you have to be to stay in business as a small, custom contractor in today’s market. Hiring a large office staff of college graduates is fine for the big Box Builders who can churn out 100 houses a year – all looking exactly the same. But for a specialist who builds them all to customer specifications – impossible!

All the same, there’s some interesting opportunities to communicate with these new-fangled contraptions and their outgrowths, meaning the internet. If someone had told me years ago that I’d be blogging, well I’d first take it as an insult. Just the sound of it is a bit unsettling. Now, though, I think it’s an interesting way to get my thoughts out there where people can see them.

I’ve been doing construction in the DC, MD, VA area now for over 30 years. I do maybe 2-5 jobs a week, big and small, from a simple bathroom upgrade which can take a day or two to a full scale addition or remodeling job which may take a few weeks. I’ve got good crews, personally trained by me. And although I don’t claim to be the best in the world, I definitely know what I’m doing and I think I’m up there at the top. This year one of my custom Tile jobs won a COTY Award (Contractor Of The Year) in the DC Metro area. I’m pretty proud of stuff like that. Honestly, we worked our butts off to make sure that job was perfect, and that’s my approach to all of them!

I have hundreds of satisfied customers, and although I’m bragging, it’s because that’s what I do it for. Not the buck, but the personal feeling that I’m making a difference in people’s lives by providing them with an environment that they feel good living in. My crew might be on another job tomorrow, but my customer is going to live in that job for years.

I really like what I do, and I like that I’m good at it. If I wasn’t I’d go do something else. Maybe if I get the time I’ll do more of this blogging stuff, and type in some of the things my customers have said about me. (I’ll just give you the good ones, OK?). Anyway, if you’re reading this and you need a house remodeled, or an addition, or a Kitchen or Bathroom remodeled (I’ve done hundreds of these), give me a call and I’ll come out and let you know what I think. Maybe you’ll be on my next year’s blog as another satisfied customer. I hope so.

    Thanks for reading,

    Pete
